The opportunity of existing assets: modernisation for new services

Location/room:
Room II
Date:
Wednesday, September 10, 2025
Time:
11.50 - 12.45 CET

Overview

The challenge of net zero requires that we use all the assets we have to hand to accelerate the transition. This will include older pumped storage facilities from earlier waves of development that are in need of modernisation and extension to maximise their flexibility. The challenges and opportunities of enhancing existing assets will be addressed in this session, exploring how this cost-effective investment option can be optimised.

Panellists will address the need to upgrade in-service pumped-storage plants and hydropower facilities through expanded pumping capacity, smart retrofits, and full lifecycle overhauls. Whether it’s installing higher-efficiency turbines, integrating advanced control and digital monitoring systems, refurbishing electromechanical components, or reinforcing civil works, modernisation keeps assets flexible, reliable, and fit for future grids.

The session will showcase recent refurbishment projects, digitalisation toolkits, and the financing strategies and regulatory incentives that make PSH modernisation a cost-effective path to enhanced storage services.

Session objectives

  • Technological upgrades and digitalisation: how can digital monitoring, smart controls, and automation be integrated into legacy systems to enhance performance and reliability?
  • Cost-effective retrofitting strategies: analysis of retrofit solutions that extend the life of existing assets while maximising energy storage capacity and grid responsiveness.
  • Hybrid dispatch and renewable integration: designing control strategies to synchronise pumped-storage with variable renewables, ensuring seamless ramping, grid balancing, and utilisation of excess solar or wind generation.
  • Policy and financing for modernisation: identifying policy reforms, financial instruments, and investment models that incentivize the modernization of aging energy infrastructure.
  • Global innovations and success stories: sharing lessons learned from international examples where modernisation initiatives have successfully increased operational efficiency and supported a more resilient energy grid.
