Atle Harby is a senior research scientist at SINTEF Energy Research in Norway. He has more than 30 years of experience in research on hydropower, environmental impacts of river regulations, water resources problems, hydrology, climate change impacts, greenhouse gas emissions from reservoirs, hydropower's role in the energy system and energy storage technologies. From 2009 until 2016, he was the Director of the research centre CEDREN (Centre for Environmental Design of Renewable Energy), an interdisciplinary research centre for the technical and environmental development of hydropower, wind power, transmission lines and the implementation of environmental and energy policy. He was a member of Norway's Nature Risk Commission, appointed by the government. He is currently serving on an expert committee for socio-economic impacts of climate change, appointed by the Ministry of Climate and Environment. He is now leading the EU-funded Innovation Action project “Demonstration of sustainable refurbishment of hydropower (ReHydro)” and starting a research project on “Environmental impacts of pumped storage hydropower (EnviPump)”, funded by the Norwegian Research Council. He is also the Operating Agent of the IEA Hydro Task "Valuing hydropower services".
