The pathway to a net zero economy is posing unprecedented challenges to electric power systems; in a world dominated by non-dispatchable sources, system flexibility will be a crucial factor.
This session will explore the technical innovations of recent PSH projects that support and enable grid flexibility and enhance the operational efficiency of these assets. The session will involve owners/operators, equipment manufacturers, construction and consulting companies as well as research institutions who have studied and implemented full-scale flexibility for recent pumped storage projects.
From variable speed to battery-turbine hybridisation, hydraulic short circuit and plant digitalisation as well as design and construction challenges, this session will explore the risks and rewards associated with these technologies, and the lessons that can be drawn.
The goal is to demonstrate that PSH is certainly a well-tested technology, but that, in order to adjust to new market opportunities and power system needs, it’s also continuously evolving from design to equipment and construction technologies.
The session will be an opportunity to learn about innovation and challenges of pumped storage power plants under construction or recently put into operation. The session will have a global focus, examples of these innovative solutions include European and non-European projects.
