Taking advantage of new pumped storage policies in Europe

Location/room:
Room I
Date:
Tuesday, September 9, 2025
Time:
12.05 - 13.00 CET

Overview

The European power sector and electricity market is undergoing one of the most disruptive evolutions in its entire history.

From one side, Europe’s challenging energy transition targets, including the EU’s aim to achieve 42.5% of renewable energy by 2030 and the UK’s clean power objective for the same date, are quickly and radically changing the composition of the power fleet in the region, and at the same time posing significant technical challenges to the way our power systems are operated.

The goal of this session will be to review the impact of these reforms, discuss how the power sector is changing, and the important role that PS will play in supporting Europe’s future energy security. This session will also be the venue for the signing of the Paris Pledge, the document setting out the industry’s commitments and asks for PS in Europe.

Session objectives

  • Set out the need and opportunity for pumped storage in Europe.
  • Show the hydropower industry’s commitment to developing the sector in Europe, both in terms of operating capacity and also technological and industrial capacity.
