Supporting a new wave of projects: pumped storage from India to Australia

Location/room:
Room II
Date:
Tuesday, September 9, 2025
Time:
12.05 - 13.00 CEST

Overview

From India to Australia, many countries have been taking advantage of cheap new variable renewables. With the massive amounts of recent solar installations, are seeing a tremendous need for flexibility and especially of large capacity long duration electricity storage. To support the much needed long duration storage, governments are trialling new policies to support pumped storage, which is in turn is encouraging a wave of developer interest.

This session will discuss case studies of new policies from countries across the region and compared to discern what has been successful in bringing new projects to fruition.

Session objectives

Attendees will hear from high-level representatives of governments, multilateral development banks, consultants, and developers to understand the trends and behaviours that have supported this immense increase in pumped storage, as well as what is further required to support pumped storage going forward.

The session will explore policy solutions and new market mechanisms being developed to support pumped storage developments in the region. These include:

  • National and subnational pumped storage policies.
  • Support for transmission networks.
  • Long term energy service agreements.
  • Updated electricity market frameworks.
