Helen Barbour-Bourne is the National Sector Lead for Hydropower at GHD and a Senior Technical Director or Engineering Geology, bringing a strong foundation in ground engineering and geotechnical risk management to complex hydropower and pumped storage projects. With experience across investigative studies, design development, and EPC delivery frameworks, she is highly skilled in identifying and managing risks early to ensure feasibility, regulatory compliance, and safe project execution.
Helen has played a leading role in shaping international best practice, contributing to the International Hydropower Association’s Guidance Note on De-risking Pumped Hydro Development. She has also been instrumental in bringing the hydropower industry together in Australia for the first time, working with the IHA to host landmark events in Sydney and Brisbane and to launch Powering Australia’s Renewable Energy Future. These initiatives established new platforms for dialogue between policymakers, developers, contractors, and financiers, strengthening collaboration and visibility for hydropower in the region.
Recognised for her ability to foster collaboration across government and industry, Helen champions inclusive and culturally respectful development, with a focus on First Nations engagement, diversity, and innovation in design delivery.
