Karl Heinz Gruber studied Process Engineering and Environmental Technology at the Technical University of Graz in Austria. He completed his studies with a Doctor of Business Sciences and Industrial Economics at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany.

He is engaged in the electricity business in different positions in several divisions and countries since 1991. Internationally, he has served as CEO of VERBUND Italia as well as a member of the boards of directors of the Sorgenia Group in Italy and the EnerjiSA Group in Turkey.  

Since 2007, he is the managing director and board member of all VERBUND Hydropower Companies within VERBUND, responsible for all hydropower activities in Austria, Germany, Albania, and Spain.  

He is active in national and international associations in the field of electricity generation. Among other roles, he serves as the chairman and speaker of the Generation Committee at Oesterreichs Energie (the association of all electricity companies in Austria), as a member of the board of the Association of Bavarian Energy and Water Management (VBEW), as a member of the Committee for Energy and Climate Policy in the Association of Bavarian Industry (VBW), and as chairman of the hydropower group of vgbe (the European association of around 500 energy plant operators and suppliers).
