Mr Shakya is an Electrical engineer, a 1988 graduate from NIT, India, with post-graduate diploma from Norway and Master of Engineering from Nepal, and also a PhD researcher on electricity market design in Kathmandu University. He is currently the Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). He has worked as a professional electrical engineer in different capacities for more than 33 years in Nepal’s power sector. In 2017, he began NEA Engineering Company that became Nepal’s largest hydro-power consultant and served as Board director and Chairman of hydropower companies. He worked as director in different departments like Power Trade, System Planning and Plant Operation and finalised Master Plans for National Transmission System 2015, Nepal-India Cross-Border Interconnection Master Plan 2016 and Sustainable Distributed generation and Grid access for all SUDIGGAA 2017. Passionately active in promoting innovative technologies for Nepal in electric vehicle / trucks conversion, rural Mini-grid etc. in Nepal, he is promoting pump storage hydro PSH expansion as a solution for energy security of Nepal. He has initiated PSH and Battery Energy Storage Systems projects in Nepal for matching the supply curve of run-off river hydro with the peak loads and also provide system reserve.
