Francesco La Camera is the Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) since April 2019, bringing over 30 years of expertise in climate, sustainability, and international cooperation. Under his leadership, IRENA has strengthened strategic partnerships with global institutions such as the UNDP, UNFCCC, and the Green Climate Fund, while promoting an action-oriented approach to renewable energy and climate change.
Mr La Camera has significantly advanced the global renewable energy agenda and strengthened IRENA’s role in enabling renewable energy access in vulnerable regions, ensuring a just and inclusive energy transition. Under his leadership, IRENA has launched the "Energy Transition Accelerator Financing (ETAF)" platform, mobilizing 4.5 billion USD to accelerate renewable energy investments globally. He also oversaw the creation of IRENA’s World Energy Transitions Outlook, a key guide for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 which set the technical foundation of the global tripling target of renewable energy capacity by 2030 that has been then embedded in the UAE Consensus set at COP28.
Mr La Camera has driven IRENA’s engagement with the G20, COP summits, and other multilateral platforms, promoting renewable energy as a core pillar of sustainable development and climate action, and contributing to position IRENA’s in strategic agendas of different Government and Organisations.
